tipico casino – Consigli Construction Co., Inc. and its work on the Lillian and Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum were recently featured in the July edition of the International Association of Museum Facility Administrators’ (IAMFA) member magazine, Papyrus.

Members of the project team, Naomi Doddington and Jack Trainor, collaborated with architect SmithGroup to co-author an article that highlighted Consigli’s meticulous historic preservation work and extensive adaptive reuse that transformed one of Washington, D.C.’s oldest synagogues into a new, from-the-ground-up museum.

“This was a challenge, not only in terms of restoration but also in relation to the addition of structural systems and the creation of the water-tight environment needed for incorporation with the Museum. Careful restoration efforts ensured the synagogue could achieve appropriate museum standards, making it possible to create exhibition space on the first floor of this historic structure, and an engaging audiovisual exhibition on the second floor.”

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Meridian Hill Park, known locally as Malcolm X Park, recently reopened to visitors after Consigli Construction Co., Inc. completed the historic preservation of the lower plaza level. Consigli was selected by the National Park Service to oversee the project, which included constructing a new accessible route through the lower plaza level to provide barrier-free entry to the park. Consigli’s work also included restoring the park’s historic features.

Historic Meridian Hill Park was once occupied by President John Quincy Adams’ home. The process to convert the land into a public park was initiated in 1914 and completed in 1936. The park occupies an entire city block along 16th Street NW and was named for its location on the exact longitude of the original District of Columbia milestone marker established in 1791. The park features early examples of concrete aggregate, a new medium of construction pioneered by craftsman J.J. Earley in 1915. During the park’s restoration, Consigli worked closely with their trade partner, Atlantic Refinishing and Restoration, to install over 13,000 square feet of exposed aggregate paving to match the original finish. Consigli also installed a new accessible ramp in three sections and completed other modernizations, including adding new stormwater drains and pipes.

“In order to successfully restore Meridian Hill Park, our team had to enter the mind of J.J. Earley to learn not only the how, but the why, this historic space was constructed nearly one hundred years ago to create a masterwork of exposed aggregate concrete design,” said Naomi Doddington, Project Manager and Historic Preservationist at Consigli. “The challenge in delivering these critical renovations and modernizations was significant, but we are immensely proud of the end result.”

tipico casino“I have worked on many amazing projects throughout my twenty-year career, but Meridian Hill Park is especially significant, as this park a special place not only in Washington, D.C.’s history, but in my family’s, too, as it was where my father first met my mother,” said Sandra Rosario, Compliance Manager at Consigli. “It was an honor to work on restoring this park and support the restoration of a place where future generations will be able to create lifelong memories.”

In keeping with its commitment to do minimal harm to the existing environment around its projects, Consigli also constructed a suspended pavement system that allowed space for the roots of mature trees to continue to grow. Throughout the preservation process, Consigli took additional steps to work safely around the installation of dozens of trees, shrubs, and other plants facilitated by the National Park Service.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – For the third year in a row, Consigli’s D.C. office led a backpack drive to support local children through the Community of Hope, a non-profit working to end family homelessness. With the uncertainty of when classrooms will re-open, the 140 backpacks aimed to deliver as much hope as they did necessary supplies.

“We want to give the kids at Community of Hope the hope that they will be going back to school to get their education.

Cynthia Davis

Director of Community Donations

Consigli’s D.C. team and two local partners stuffed backpacks with crayons, folders, paper, notebooks, scissors, rulers, markers, pencil pouches, glue, erasers and Disney hand sanitizer for the children at Community of Hope’s transitional homes.

Michelle Evans, Consigli Business Manager, has been involved with the Community of Hope for 16 years and spearheaded this year’s drive.

Like everything at Consigli, it was a team effort. Many people in our D.C. office jumped in to help throughout the five-week drive.

“This was the best backpack drive we’ve ever done. We normally do 30-35 backpacks. This year, we doubled it and partnered with two other companies – Menkiti Group, our MLK Gateway Project client, and H2DesignBuild, our general contractor partner.

Michelle Evans

Consigli Business Manager

With the MLK Gateway Project underway in the same ward of D.C. as the Community of Hope, Menkiti Group and H2DesignBuild were eager to get involved.

Consigli donated 70 stuffed backpacks, surpassing our goal of 50. Menkiti Group provided 50 and H2DesignBuild provided 20. Our local subcontractors Livingston Fire Protection, Max Electric and BB & Co Construction also made donations to the drive.

Together, Consigli’s D.C. team surpassed our goal with the 2020 backpack drive while supporting the next generation in our community!

The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, is undergoing its first major renovation since the museum opened its doors more than 40 years ago in 1976.  The Smithsonian has selected Clark/Smoot/Consigli for a six-year contract to renovate the National Air and Space Museum. The joint venture team is comprised of Clark Construction Group, LLC, Smoot Construction Co., and Consigli Construction Co., Inc.

As construction manager-at-risk, CSC will work with the Smithsonian to remove and replace the exterior stone façade, glass curtain wall, and skylights, as well as add an iconic tensile roof entrance canopy with an abstract shape of wings inspired by images of the early flying machines developed by Leonardo DaVinci. The team also will update the infrastructure of  the museum’s gallery and presentation spaces, replace outdated mechanical and electrical systems, and perform other building improvements. The CSC team will also assist with relocating artifacts to the museum’s Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA.

The National Air and Space Museum revitalization is Clark’s 16th project for the Smithsonian. Most recently, Clark – in a partnership with Smoot –was the contractor for the National Museum of African American History and Culture, which opened in September 2016.

“Clark is excited to continue our successful partnership with the Smithsonian,” said Jared Oldroyd, Clark’s Vice President Tipico promo Codeoverseeing the renovation project. “We take great pride in delivering monumental projects that inspire millions of visitors per year. We are honored to have the once in a lifetime opportunity to restore a national treasure for the enjoyment of future generations.”

“The National Air and Space Museum is both a national landmark and a signature project for our company,” said Matthew Consigli, President of Consigli Construction Co., Inc. “We strive to work on projects that can have a significant impact on their communities. We are excited to work to restore the museum’s style and beauty.” Consigli has restored a number of museums including the Smithsonian’s Renwick Gallery, Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford, CT, the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, NY, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

With a portfolio that includes monumental buildings, monuments, and museums, Smoot Construction Company also has a long history of working with the Smithsonian on the National Mall. “The opportunity to work for the Smithsonian again is a great privilege, and to work on the National Air and Space Museum again is a special honor,” said Mark S. Cain, President and CEO of Smoot. “More than 40 years ago, we were a masonry subcontractor on the museum and today, we’re part of the team managing the renovation.”

The joint venture team of museum builders and renovation experts is providing preconstruction services including budgeting, scheduling, design coordination, and detailed planning for the renovation work. Clark/Smoot/Consigli has worked with the Smithsonian to develop a phased approach that allows the National Air and Space Museum to remain operational throughout construction. In the fall of 2018, construction will begin on the west side of the museum.

The DC Public Library has selected Consigli Construction Co., Inc. and HGA as the design/build team for the new Lamond-Riggs Library.

With this team in place, the planning for the new Lamond-Riggs Library will begin in October. The new library will be built at 5401 South Dakota Ave. NE, the current site of the Lamond-Riggs Library.  With a budget of $20 million, the new building will be designed to support modern library uses and achieve LEED Gold certification for environmental design.

HGA is a national multidisciplinary design firm rooted in architecture and engineering. In addition to award-winning libraries, the firm serves clients in corporate, government, community, education, arts, healthcare, and energy industries. HGA has offices in Alexandria, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and eight other cities across the country. Recent projects include the new Brambleton Library in Loudoun County, Virginia and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Heart and Transplant Hospital at UPMC Presbyterian.

Collectively, the Consigli/HGA team has completed more than 230 libraries.

The design/build team was selected by a panel made up of Library staff and community representatives recommended by the ward council member.  The community representatives are: the president of the Lamond-Riggs Civic Association; the ANC Commissioner for the single-member district where the Lamond-Riggs Library is located and the President of the Friends of the Lamond-Riggs Library.

The Library received nine submissions. Each submission was evaluated against a list of criteria, including how the firm plans to manage the project, key personnel (including demonstrated strength in working with libraries and on similar projects), how the firm plans to use D.C.-certified small businesses and price. With the team identified, the contract will be sent to the D.C. City Council for approval.

The design process will take approximately 12 months. Once the design is complete, the current building will be closed and an interim location will provide library service during construction. The new building will open in late 2020.

Community engagement is critical to the design process. The Library will seek input through meetings, surveys, focus groups and online feedback. To learn more about the project and community input opportunities, click here.

The new Lamond-Riggs Library is a critical part of the DC Public Library’s “Know Your Neighborhood” strategic plan, and will help the Library ensure our five year goal that 75 percent of the city’s residents have active library cards, tipico sportsbook reviewsfive million visits occur every year at its facilities and library events, and five million books and other items are borrowed annually.

WASHINGTON D.C. — Director of D.C. Operations, Eric Tievy was profiled in the Washington Business Journal. Below is an excerpt from the article:

When Consigli Construction Co. Inc., based in Milford, Massachusetts, decided to open a D.C. office in 2016, it was a natural fit. The firm was known for its historic renovation and construction work — skills frequently needed in the District. Consigli brought native Washingtonian and career construction exec Eric Tievy on board to lead the new office, which now boasts 40 employees.

On the office’s list of recent work? The interior fit-out for The Anthem at The Wharf — including installing the back-lit LED stage curtains — and a renovation of the Phillips Collection in Dupont Circle.

Biggest current challenge? The greatest challenge is the lack of trade labor to support the amount of construction going on in D.C. There’s not enough true skilled tradesman to support the day-to-day activities.

What’s the solution? As an industry, we are trying to foster an interest in trade labor early on. And as a company, it’s a matter of being very selective about the projects we pursue. We never want to take on a project that we’re not able to service to the standards we expect.

Next project? The D.C. office has four key verticals — government and public sector, museum and cultural, education and private development. We just kicked off a project to upgrade the entire emergency power system for the Rayburn House Office building. We’re going to do a completely new electrical backbone along with providing them with emergency power generators. That’s scheduled for two years — of course, our goal is always to finish ahead of schedule.

Best business advice you’ve received? This applies far beyond business, but to understand that things that we embark on are a marathon and not a sprint.

Read the entire Q&A here.
