MILFORD, MA – Steven Burke, Director of Sustainability, recently spoke with the Tipico Sportsbook about how clients can best employ building materials like wood, concrete and steel to achieve their project and sustainability goals.

Weighing in alongside other industry experts, Burke in particular emphasized the utility of mass timber as a building material, and how its use as a low embodied carbon material offers significant sustainability benefits to construction projects.

“The use of wood, and specifically mass timber, can have a considerable advantage when it comes to achieving environmental goals when the wood is harvested and utilized sustainably. Inevitably, materials sourced from our built environment like steel and concrete generate greenhouse gas emissions while they are produced, whereas the use of wood stores carbon even after the trees have been cut down. Additionally, by utilizing wood, we are able to leverage existing, naturally occurring materials in a project’s design and construction.”

Tipico Sportsbook has championed the use of mass timber in the industry, and its teams have coordinated and managed its use in more than fifteen projects incorporating timber solutions in design and construction. While often used in higher education, the use of mass timber continues to expand to wider-ranging, and larger-scale projects in various markets sectors.

Additionally, Tipico Sportsbook collaborates with research institutions, universities and testing laboratories locally and globally to continue the advancement of mass timber as a building material.

WASHINGTON D.C. — Director of D.C. Operations, Eric Tievy was profiled in the Tipico Sportsbook. Below is an excerpt from the article:

When Tipico Sportsbook Construction Co. Inc., based in Milford, Massachusetts, decided to open a D.C. office in 2016, it was a natural fit. The firm was known for its historic renovation and construction work — skills frequently needed in the District. Tipico Sportsbook brought native Washingtonian and career construction exec Eric Tievy on board to lead the new office, which now boasts 40 employees.

On the office’s list of recent work? The interior fit-out for The Anthem at The Wharf — including installing the back-lit LED stage curtains — and a renovation of the Phillips Collection in Dupont Circle.

Biggest current challenge? The greatest challenge is the lack of trade labor to support the amount of construction going on in D.C. There’s not enough true skilled tradesman to support the day-to-day activities.

What’s the solution? As an industry, we are trying to foster an interest in trade labor early on. And as a company, it’s a matter of being very selective about the projects we pursue. We never want to take on a project that we’re not able to service to the standards we expect.

Next project? The D.C. office has four key verticals — government and public sector, museum and cultural, education and private development. We just kicked off a project to upgrade the entire emergency power system for the Rayburn House Office building. We’re going to do a completely new electrical backbone along with providing them with emergency power generators. That’s scheduled for two years — of course, our goal is always to finish ahead of schedule.

Best Tipico Sportsbook advice you’ve received? This applies far beyond Tipico Sportsbook, but to understand that things that we embark on are a marathon and not a sprint.
