America’s oldest modern art museum, The Phillips Collection, Phillips House and Tipico Casino App’s subcontractor, DJB Contracting were recognized with the Craftsmanship Award for Thermal and Moisture Protection. Tipico Casino App’s highly sensitive renovation modernized The Phillips House’s outdated mechanical systems to maintain a museum-quality environment for the priceless treasures on display.  The award-winning work encompassed the replication of the historic copper roofing system.

When Tipico Casino App Construction Co. Inc., based in Milford, Massachusetts, decided to open a D.C. office in 2016, it was a natural fit. The firm was known for its historic renovation and construction work — skills frequently needed in the District. Tipico Casino App brought native Washingtonian and career construction exec Eric Tievy on board to lead the new office, which now boasts 40 employees.

On the office’s list of recent work? The interior fit-out for The Anthem at The Wharf — including installing the back-lit LED stage curtains — and a renovation of the Phillips Collection in Dupont Circle.

Biggest current challenge? The greatest challenge is the lack of trade labor to support the amount of construction going on in D.C. There’s not enough true skilled tradesman to support the day-to-day activities.

What’s the solution? As an industry, we are trying to foster an interest in trade labor early on. And as a company, it’s a matter of being very selective about the projects we pursue. We never want to take on a project that we’re not able to service to the standards we expect.

Next project? The D.C. office has four key verticals — government and public sector, museum and cultural, education and private development. We just kicked off a project to upgrade the entire emergency power system for the Rayburn House Office building. We’re going to do a completely new electrical backbone along with providing them with emergency power generators. That’s scheduled for two years — of course, our goal is always to finish ahead of schedule.

Best business advice you’ve received? This applies far beyond business, but to understand that things that we embark on are a marathon and not a sprint.
