WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Williams College’s Davis Center has been honored by Engineering News Record (ENR) as a recipient of the 2024 Award of Merit in its annual Regional Best Project Awards. It received the award in the Higher Education/Research category for the New England region.

The Davis Center, the College’s center for the advancement of institutional diversity, equity and inclusion, connects multiple buildings on campus and transformed existing facilities to better reflect the Center’s mission and serve current and future academic and cultural needs. Through a major new addition and comprehensive energy retrofit renovations to the 19th century Rice and Jenness Houses, the new Davis Center provides fully accessible resources and community spaces for students and faculty.

Utilizing mass timber and engineered wood hybrid materials, the all-electric project removed fossil fuel-based heating systems and was built to rigorous environmental standards to support the College’s commitment to sustainability. It is targeting Petal Certification under the Living Building Challenge, as well as strict Energy Use Index requirements to reduce energy loads on campus.

Project teams recognized by ENR’s panel of judges were evaluated on their ability to overcome challenges, contribute to industry innovation and benefit the community, as well as overall excellence in design, construction and safety execution.

BOSTON, MA – Consigli Construction Co., Inc. has been named one of the Top Places to Work in Massachusetts by The Boston Globe for the fifteenth consecutive year. At the award ceremony on November 29, Consigli was also recognized for its status as one of the longest running companies to receive recognition on the annual list.

Each year, companies and workplaces across Massachusetts are recognized by The Boston Globe as Top Places to Work based on employee feedback captured through surveys. The survey measures employee opinions about their company’s direction, execution, connection, management, work, pay and benefits, and engagement. The employers are placed into one of four groups: small (50-99 employees); medium (100-249 employees); large (250-999 employees); and largest (1,000 or more employees).

MILFORD, MA – Consigli Construction Co., Inc. has been recognized as one of the Top Places to Work in Massachusetts by The Boston Globe. This year’s award marks the thirteenth consecutive year that Consigli has received this honor, making it one of the longest running companies to be a part of this prestigious list. The winners were announced at an event on December 1.

“We are humbled to be recognized again this year. The workplace continues to evolve, and our people have found ways to strengthen our company culture,” said Matthew Consigli, President of Consigli Construction Co., Inc. “This award is acknowledgment of what they bring to our organization each day, and I am truly honored to work alongside them.”

Top Places to Work recognizes the most admired workplaces in the state voted on by the people who know them best—their employees. The survey measures employee opinions about their company’s direction, execution, connection, management, work, pay and benefits, and engagement. The employers are placed into one of four groups: small, with 50 to 99 employees; medium, with 100 to 249 workers; large, with 250 to 999; and largest, with 1,000 or more.

Consigli was a strong contender for this award because of its employee-centric benefits plans and company perks, including paid volunteer time, fitness reimbursements, and employee stock ownership plans. The company’s focus on creating a culture of accountability and safety, supporting the health and wellness of its people and their families, and maintaining a healthy work/life balance also contributed to this recognition.

The rankings in Top Places to Work are based on confidential survey information collected by Energage (formerly WorkplaceDynamics), an independent company specializing in employee engagement and retention, from more than 80,000 individuals at 363 Massachusetts organizations. The winners share a few key traits, including offering more flexibility to continue working remotely, tracking progress on efforts to support a diverse workforce, and, above all, remembering to have some fun along the way.

Written by: Jack Moran, Manager of VDC Services

We are constantly striving to provide new and innovative services to deliver the best project outcomes for our clients. Five years ago when Raghi Iyengar decided to found Manufacton, a software company that would bring the best of manufacturing to construction, approached Consigli to help develop a software system specifically catered to support pre-fabrication and offsite construction, we saw it as a perfect fit to work with him and his team as Consigli was still developing our approach to prefab. Fast forward to today, we have seen Raghi and his team grow to 50 people and provide services across the industry.

Manufacton’s advanced cloud-based software helps companies manage construction materials, offsite production, and onsite installation across their entire business–with expert support to keep them running. By working out of Consigli’s headquarters five years ago, Raghi was able to hear directly from teams what they needed, specifically on projects that had pre-fabrication and modular building components. It was also a unique opportunity for us at Consigli to see what happens behind the scenes in software development.

To celebrate his work with us, I sat down with Raghi to talk about the origin of our partnership with his team, hear his insights into future trends, and what he has enjoyed about working with the larger Consigli team for the last five years.

Q:
Can you tell us how the partnership between Consigli and Manufacton came to be?

Raghi: I have been in the construction technology business for over 30 years. Earlier in this decade, I started to see construction companies looking to take their construction offsite. They were evaluating opportunities to do more prefab, kitting and even volumetric modules. In essence, the construction industry was trying to emulate manufacturing. I met Matthew Consigli to hear his perspective on how this could impact the future of construction. He confirmed noticing these trends as well and was thinking of ways in which Consigli could spearhead this movement. He invited me to work in Consigli’s headquarters in Milford, so that I could be fully immersed in the industry and gain perspectives from project executives, as well as visit job sites to meet with subcontractors to hear first-hand about the needs and potential roadblocks.

Q: Did having a desk at Consigli help shape Manufacton’s business?

R: The opportunity to have Consigli as an incubator has been amazing. The best part of working in Consigli’s office was having direct access to the team and being able to collaborate with project executives, VDC engineers and general superintendents. Consigli team members would stop by to ask what we were working on and talk through pre-fabrication and industry ideas. It was really helpful to get their perspective and insights as we were developing the software — especially in learning about the risks with transition to offsite construction. They also introduced us to innovative subcontractors. We would brainstorm together what pre-fabrication and manufacturing would even look like in construction, and I believe these collaborative moments helped shape Manufacton to what it is today.

Q: What innovations in AEC are you driving with Manufacton?

R: When we started talking to superintendents about taking more of the construction offsite, it became clear that their biggest concern was losing visibility and control of the construction supply chain. A superintendent summarized it very well. He said “I walk my job site at least a couple of times a day to make sure everything is running smoothly. I would not be happy if I was told that I needed to stay in the trailer and walk my job site only once every 2 weeks. But that is what happens when you take work offsite. You cannot drive over to all the remote factories, but you need to ensure you have visibility and control of which subcontractor is building what prefab components in which factory, when are they supposed to be produced and delivered to the job site, and how far along they are in the process. I do not want any surprises about when things are supposed to show up at my job site.” Everyone on the project has access to Manufacton in the cloud, and gets visibility into current status. Coordinated BIM/VDC models are automatically color-coded to show which prefab assemblies or modules are in detailing, manufacturing, delivery or installation. They can fliter the model to show what has been installed in the past month, what is scheduled to be delivered in the next month and so on.

Subcontractors and modular builders leverage Manufacton to optimize their factory production as they push to do more prefab. Some of them are even verticalizing their business to become design-manufacturing-construction companies. Their biggest frustration before Manufacton was that their factory was a “black box” and their own design and field teams did not have visibility into their factory production.

Q: Can you describe a Consigli project that utilized Manufacton’s technology?

R: The team for the 50 Rogers Street project brought in Manufacton because they decided early during the planning phase that they were going to use pre-fabrication. The project is a mixed-use building in Cambridge with hardly any lay-down or areas to build. The prefabrication components of the building were coming from different areas: steel from Canada, bathroom pods from a factory in Florida, and the infinity wall system from Pennsylvania. Traditionally, teams would have to call the different manufacturers to get status updates as well as keep track of lengthy project briefings. In this case, however, the team utilized Manufacton to track all of these moving parts during the entire process. The software provides a color-coded, digital model of the building so that teams can quickly scan the model to see what part of the building is in the detailing, manufacturing, delivery, or installing phases.

Q: What have you enjoyed the most in working with Consigli?

R: The culture. Consigli is an incredibly innovative company filled with people that do not accept the status quo. Teams ask questions, are always open to ideas, and are very supportive. Consigli has been a partner to us since our beginning and has helped us shape our thinking and validated what we were discovering along the way. I hope we keep growing together for many years to come.

Manufacton’s willingness to be part of the Consigli team proved to be an invaluable partnership for both companies. As we look to the future, by continuing to push further into prefabrication, Raghi and the larger Manufacton’s team’s responsiveness and insights will continue to produce rich outcomes for both companies to better serve clients.

Tanglewood Music Center is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) and a renowned cultural landmark nestled in the Berkshire hills of Massachusetts. It welcomes many of the world’s best known classical and popular musicians for concerts, attracting audiences of 330,000 people in just three months. Architect and project partner, William Rawn of Boston’s William Rawn Associates, teamed with Consigli on the project to transform a summer concert venue into a $33 million, four-building, year-round addition to the 524-acre campus. The new Linde Center for Music and Learning made its debut on June 28, 2019.

“A commitment to accommodating complexity is part of Consigli’s DNA. I think they enjoy working with highly sophisticated clients and solving problems.”

Consigli was tasked with a unique challenge: in 14 months, build a 25,000 sq. ft. world-class performance venue without disrupting any of the 2018 summer concert season. The Consigli team took a fast-track scheduling approach to ensure the buildings were enclosed by the spring, so less disruptive work could continue on the building’s interiors during the busy festival months. A strict delivery schedule was maintained and work was closely monitored to ensure the Tanglewood guest experience went uninterrupted. In naming Consigli the ENR New England “2019 Contractor of the Year,” the publication recognized Consigli for tackling some of the region’s most technically challenging projects, particularly those with unique schedule requirements.

The Linde Center at Tanglewood is an interconnected complex that includes a 200-seat, multi-purpose studio for rehearsals, lectures and events, a 150-seat café building with a servery and commercial kitchen, and a curved covered walkway connecting two additional learning/practice studios. The facility hosts space dedicated to the Tanglewood Music Center, a prestigious summer academy, and the Tanglewood Learning Institute, a popular lecture and adult education program. The project also incorporated an updated campus horticultural plan, which required a new irrigation system, preservation of a 100-year old oak tree and the planting of over 140 new trees and shrubs to provide welcome shade for concert-goers.

Consigli Project Manager David Brehaut described some of the challenges of the project, including the fact that the building facades are clad in a variety of materials—western red cedar shakes, curtain wall, zinc-coated copper reveals, sharp roof rakes, and fiberglass Z-Girts. He says, “it took quite a bit of coordination to get it right the first time,” citing Consigli’s pre-construction efforts to align the dissimilar materials and a stringent quality control process during construction to monitor the installation and create an effective air vapor barrier.

Tanglewood’s new studios and performance halls required extraordinary attention to acoustical detail, addressed through a design with fewer right angles and multi-layered flooring and wall systems to further dampen sound transfer within the spaces.

© Robert Benson Photography

In Studio E, the main studio space, all interior millwork was fabricated by Consigli’s Millshop in Pleasant Valley, NY and installed by in-house self-perform carpenters. Says Brehaut, “Each of the millwork-clad ceiling panels that conceal the HVAC ductwork, lighting systems, and rigging weigh between 300-400 lbs. and had to be carefully hoisted in place by two scissor lifts. A sliding wood screen conceals a sliding NanaWall. In the summer, Tanglewood can retract both systems to have open air-seating for performances.”

The new Linde Center for Music and Learning is a dynamic addition to Tanglewood’s campus—and a source of pride for Consigli—demonstrating the quality craftsmanship, schedule certainty and innovative approaches that distinguish the company as ENR New England’s 2019 Contractor of the Year.
