MILFORD, MA – On Saturday, March 16, Consigli Construction Co., Inc. joined Woburn Mayor Galvin, the Woburn Public Library Foundation and the local community to celebrate the grand opening of the newly restored and expanded Woburn Public Library. The $31.5 million city-bonded renovation and expansion project involved Consigli leading the complete restoration of the 19th-century National Historic Landmark on Pleasant Street and the construction of a new wing.

The Saturday afternoon celebration began with performances by the Woburn Memorial High School’s band and its a cappella choir. There was also a ribbon cutting and a reading of an original poem written by Woburn resident and author Morgan Crooks to mark the occasion. The public was then invited into the building to explore its new and renovated spaces.

Consigli’s work at the library involved preserving the façade, roof and interior of the original 1879 H.H. Richardson-designed Romanesque building — his first commission since designing Boston’s Trinity Church in Copley Square — as well as modernizing the building and creating an addition to make the space adaptable to 21st century needs.

Now the glass wall of the new 15,000 square foot addition provides a spectacular view while new openings in the sandstone façade provide easy access between the original historic and the new spaces. The addition features new children’s and teen sections; a makerspace with a 3D printer; a presentation room with a 170-person capacity and a state-of-the-art AV system; an automated book sorting machine; laptop rentals; and study rooms and executive offices.

The DC Public Library has selected Consigli Construction Co., Inc. and HGA as the design/build team for the new Lamond-Riggs Library.

With this team in place, the planning for the new Lamond-Riggs Library will begin in October. The new library will be built at 5401 South Dakota Ave. NE, the current site of the Lamond-Riggs Library.  With a budget of $20 million, the new building will be designed to support modern library uses and achieve LEED Gold certification for environmental design.

HGA is a national multidisciplinary design firm rooted in architecture and engineering. In addition to award-winning libraries, the firm serves clients in corporate, government, community, education, arts, healthcare, and energy industries. HGA has offices in Alexandria, Virginia, Washington, D.C., and eight other cities across the country. Recent projects include the new Brambleton Library in Loudoun County, Virginia and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Heart and Transplant Hospital at UPMC Presbyterian.

Collectively, the Consigli/HGA team has completed more than 230 libraries.

The design/build team was selected by a panel made up of Library staff and community representatives recommended by the ward council member.  The community representatives are: the president of the Lamond-Riggs Civic Association; the ANC Commissioner for the single-member district where the Lamond-Riggs Library is located and the President of the Friends of the Lamond-Riggs Library.

The Library received nine submissions. Each submission was evaluated against a list of criteria, including how the firm plans to manage the project, key personnel (including demonstrated strength in working with libraries and on similar projects), how the firm plans to use D.C.-certified small businesses and price. With the team identified, the contract will be sent to the D.C. City Council for approval.

The design process will take approximately 12 months. Once the design is complete, the current building will be closed and an interim location will provide library service during construction. The new building will open in late 2020.

Community engagement is critical to the design process. The Library will seek input through meetings, surveys, focus groups and online feedback. To learn more about the project and community input opportunities, click here.

The new Lamond-Riggs Library is a critical part of the DC Public Library’s “Know Your Neighborhood” strategic plan, and will help the Library ensure our five year goal that 75 percent of the city’s residents have active library cards, five million visits occur every year at its facilities and library events, and five million books and other items are borrowed annually.
