WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Williams College’s Davis Center has been honored by Engineering News Record (ENR) as a recipient of the 2024 Award of Merit in its annual Regional Best Project Awards. It received the award in the Higher Education/Research category for the New England region.

The Davis Center, the College’s center for the advancement of institutional diversity, equity and inclusion, connects multiple buildings on campus and transformed existing facilities to better reflect the Center’s mission and serve current and future academic and cultural needs. Through a major new addition and comprehensive energy retrofit renovations to the 19th century Rice and Jenness Houses, the new Davis Center provides fully accessible resources and community spaces for students and faculty.

Utilizing mass timber and engineered wood hybrid materials, the all-electric project removed fossil fuel-based heating systems and was built to rigorous environmental standards to support the College’s commitment to sustainability. It is targeting Petal Certification under the Living Building Challenge, as well as strict Energy Use Index requirements to reduce energy loads on campus.

Project teams recognized by ENR’s panel of judges were evaluated on their ability to overcome challenges, contribute to industry innovation and benefit the community, as well as overall excellence in design, construction and safety execution.

WASHINGTON, D.C.Engineering News Record (ENR) recently featured Phil Brault, Director of Operations, in its March edition of the Washington, D.C. City Scoop. The regional, monthly column in ENR highlights local industry leaders and their observations on current market trends.

Brault discussed the increased concentration on carbon neutrality and sustainability building trends that Consigli Construction Co., Inc. continues to see – particularly in the higher education market – as well as the growing utilization of pre-fabricated elements in projects.

“Incorporating pre-fabricated elements into the design and build process can be both more efficient and more effective, as it also reduces onsite labor needs, which supports lower costs, a higher quality product and ultimately a safer jobsite.”

The City Scoop brief also focused on ongoing work that the Consigli team has in the Mid-Atlantic region, as well as the markets Brault sees continued growth and opportunity.

“The market outlook in D.C. remains  strong with an influx of opportunities  in health care, education, hospitality, museums and cultural and government markets, including many large-scale, complex projects.”

PORTLAND, ME – The John and Lile Gibbons Center for Arctic Studies and Barry Mills Hall on the Bowdoin College’s campus has been honored by Engineering News Record (ENR) as a 2023 New England Best Project of the Year. It received top honors in the Higher Education/Research category.

The first pure mass timber structure in Maine, the $28.5 million, 46,000 sq. ft. project utilized glue laminated beams, columns and trusses, as well as other materials. To mitigate potential supply chain and skilled workforce challenges, Consigli proactively secured pricing for the mass timber ahead of significant lumber price increases.

To further support cost savings, Consigli utilized a 4D model using cost analysis to compare mass timber with a more traditional steel, concrete and masonry superstructure and demonstrated that mass timber pre-fabrication strategies was the best choice for the project. Funding for the cost comparison was supported by the U.S. Forest Service, making Bowdoin College one of just 10 institutions to receive agency funding to bring sustainable change to the nation’s working forests and forest-reliant communities.

In addition to receiving this New England regional honor, Consigli also received ENR New York’s top award in the K-12 Education category for its work on the Bronx High School of Science – Stanley Manne ’52 Institute of Science.

Project teams recognized by ENR’s panel of judges as regional Best Project winners were evaluated on how they were able to overcome challenges, contribute to industry innovation and benefit the community, as well as overall excellence in design, construction and safety execution.

NEW YORK, NY – The Bronx High School of Science – Stanley Manne ’52 Institute of Science has been honored by Engineering News Record (ENR) as a 2023 New York Best Project of the Year. It received top honors in the K-12 Education category.

The 10,000 sq. ft. facility provides Bronx High School of Science students with state-of-the-art university and corporate quality research lab spaces outfitted with new, modern equipment. Consigli’s project team overcame various obstacles during construction related to design changes and supply chain issues by carefully coordinating material releases and offering creative solutions, including working with subcontractors for schedule flexibility.

In compliance with New York City’s Local Law 97, which requires most large buildings to meet new energy efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions limits by 2024, the Stanley Manne ’52 Institute eliminates use of fossil fuel burning equipment. The structure is one of the first fully electrified laboratory buildings in New York City, with an impressive energy use index registering far below that of peer buildings using the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories benchmarking.

In addition to receiving this New York regional honor, Consigli also received ENR New England’s top award in the Higher Education/Research category for its work on Bowdoin College’s John and Lile Gibbons Center for Arctic Studies and Barry Mills Hall.

Project teams recognized by ENR’s panel of judges as regional Best Project winners were evaluated on how they were able to overcome challenges, contribute to industry innovation and benefit the community, as well as overall excellence in design, construction and safety execution.

Tanglewood Music Center is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra (BSO) and a renowned cultural landmark nestled in the Berkshire hills of Massachusetts. It welcomes many of the world’s best known classical and popular musicians for concerts, attracting audiences of 330,000 people in just three months. Architect and project partner, William Rawn of Boston’s William Rawn Associates, teamed with Consigli on the project to transform a summer concert venue into a $33 million, four-building, year-round addition to the 524-acre campus. The new Linde Center for Music and Learning made its debut on June 28, 2019.

“A commitment to accommodating complexity is part of Consigli’s DNA. I think they enjoy working with highly sophisticated clients and solving problems.”

Consigli was tasked with a unique challenge: in 14 months, build a 25,000 sq. ft. world-class performance venue without disrupting any of the 2018 summer concert season. The Consigli team took a fast-track scheduling approach to ensure the buildings were enclosed by the spring, so less disruptive work could continue on the building’s interiors during the busy festival months. A strict delivery schedule was maintained and work was closely monitored to ensure the Tanglewood guest experience went uninterrupted. In naming Consigli the ENR New England “2019 Contractor of the Year,” the publication recognized Consigli for tackling some of the region’s most technically challenging projects, particularly those with unique schedule requirements.

The Linde Center at Tanglewood is an interconnected complex that includes a 200-seat, multi-purpose studio for rehearsals, lectures and events, a 150-seat café building with a servery and commercial kitchen, and a curved covered walkway connecting two additional learning/practice studios. The facility hosts space dedicated to the Tanglewood Music Center, a prestigious summer academy, and the Tanglewood Learning Institute, a popular lecture and adult education program. The project also incorporated an updated campus horticultural plan, which required a new irrigation system, preservation of a 100-year old oak tree and the planting of over 140 new trees and shrubs to provide welcome shade for concert-goers.

Consigli Project Manager David Brehaut described some of the challenges of the project, including the fact that the building facades are clad in a variety of materials—western red cedar shakes, curtain wall, zinc-coated copper reveals, sharp roof rakes, and fiberglass Z-Girts. He says, “it took quite a bit of coordination to get it right the first time,” citing Consigli’s pre-construction efforts to align the dissimilar materials and a stringent quality control process during construction to monitor the installation and create an effective air vapor barrier.

Tanglewood’s new studios and performance halls required extraordinary attention to acoustical detail, addressed through a design with fewer right angles and multi-layered flooring and wall systems to further dampen sound transfer within the spaces.

© Robert Benson Photography

In Studio E, the main studio space, all interior millwork was fabricated by Consigli’s Millshop in Pleasant Valley, NY and installed by in-house self-perform carpenters. Says Brehaut, “Each of the millwork-clad ceiling panels that conceal the HVAC ductwork, lighting systems, and rigging weigh between 300-400 lbs. and had to be carefully hoisted in place by two scissor lifts. A sliding wood screen conceals a sliding NanaWall. In the summer, Tanglewood can retract both systems to have open air-seating for performances.”

The new Linde Center for Music and Learning is a dynamic addition to Tanglewood’s campus—and a source of pride for Consigli—demonstrating the quality craftsmanship, schedule certainty and innovative approaches that distinguish the company as ENR New England’s 2019 Contractor of the Year.

Consigli Construction Co., Inc. has been named Engineering News-Record’s 2019 New England Contractor of the Year. The Top Contractors list, published annually, ranks the general contractors, both publicly and privately held, based on construction contracting-specific revenue. The full list includes firms from Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont.

“We are thrilled to be recognized by ENR for the work that we do across New England.  As the largest self-performing construction manager in the region, we are proud of all our craftspeople and project teams that work hard to make our company and the work we produce so exceptional,” said Anthony Consigli, CEO of Consigli. “We know that a company is only as good as its people and culture, so this recognition speaks volumes to everyone who works tirelessly on and off job sites.”

ENR commended Consigli for its commitment to craftsmanship, as well as its integration of effective, cutting-edge technology. Last year, some workers began using exoskeleton tools such as a wearable metal framework fitted with motorized “muscles” for use in the field. Consigli is also the only construction manager currently deploying another robotic tool on projects called the ZeroG Arm, according to the AGC and EkoBionics.

Consigli has also previously won 11 ENR New England Best Projects awards since 2012, including the new Sandy Hook Elementary School and the Boston Public Library’s central library renovation in 2017.
