Participants, including members of the Consigli project team, subcontractors, and project stakeholders, came together to donate blood and support the life-saving work done by NYBC and its efforts to ensure sufficient blood supplies for patients in-need.

The new, multipurpose NYBCe campus in Rye broke ground in June 2023, and when complete, will be the future home to NYBC’s tri-state operations, including space for life sciences research, blood collections, distribution warehouse, processing and cell therapy manufacturing. It will also house the organization’s world-renowned Research Institute and research laboratories. The 187,000 sq. ft. will serve as the first-ever single campus for NYBC.

Construction remains underway and is expected to complete by the end of the year.

The holidays are looking much different for everyone this year, and many families will be experiencing food insecurity for the first time due of the impact of the COVID-19 crisis,” said Cheryl Schondek, Senior Vice President of The Greater Boston Food Bank. “With your ongoing support, we can end hunger here.”

This is the latest chapter in Consigli’s relationship with the City of Boston and The Greater Boston Food Bank. Consigli was a key partner in the original construction of The Greater Boston Food Bank’s Yawkey Distribution Center back in 2009, which allowed the organization to double the size of its existing warehouse by creating a new, sustainable headquarters in Boston’s South End. This new location accommodated 50 million pounds of food – a 67% increase over the old facility – and was built based on a zero export plan reusing existing pile caps and contaminated soil to save nearly $1M for the organization.

Consigli’s D.C. team and two local partners stuffed backpacks with crayons, folders, paper, notebooks, scissors, rulers, markers, pencil pouches, glue, erasers and Disney hand sanitizer for the children at Community of Hope’s transitional homes.

Michelle Evans, Consigli Business Manager, has been involved with the Community of Hope for 16 years and spearheaded this year’s drive.

Like everything at Consigli, it was a team effort. Many people in our D.C. office jumped in to help throughout the five-week drive.

With the MLK Gateway Project underway in the same ward of D.C. as the Community of Hope, Menkiti Group and H2DesignBuild were eager to get involved.

Consigli donated 70 stuffed backpacks, surpassing our goal of 50. Menkiti Group provided 50 and H2DesignBuild provided 20. Our local subcontractors Livingston Fire Protection, Max Electric and BB & Co Construction also made donations to the drive.

Together, Consigli’s D.C. team surpassed our goal with the 2020 backpack drive while supporting the next generation in our community!

When Andrew Del Rossi Biggio, an Afghanistan War veteran, found a World War II rifle and later learned about one of the most important battles in that war’s history – The Battle of the Bulge; it inspired him to travel the country and document the stories of the survivors. His collection of oral histories will become a book published in the spring and will be a unique opportunity to hear directly from the remaining survivors about their experiences. Moved by the stories he heard, Andrew reached out to Consigli to help sponsor a six-day trip for these veterans to return to Europe to acknowledge their service and to remember those lost. In December, seventeen New England area Battle of the Bulge veterans left from Logan Airport to commemorate the 75th anniversary. As part of our ongoing commitment to veterans and to show our support for this momentous trip, we gifted the group Consigli jackets to keep them warm and easily identifiable to each other while in Europe.

Known as one of the bloodiest battles in War World II, on December 16, 1944, Adolf Hitler launched the Wacht am Rhein (“Watch on the Rhine”), a surprise attack near the Ardennes Forest in Belgium. On that day, 200,000 German soldiers discharged a heavy artillery attack against 100,000 Americans. Known as the Battle of the Bulge, Hitler thought this battle would be the German version of D-Day in a final attempt to break through Allied force lines and reach the Atlantic coast. After almost two months of fighting, the Allies held strong and maintained their lines against the Germans, but at a heavy cost. Still known as the largest battle ever fought by the U.S. Army, more than 100,000 Americans were killed.

The veterans return to Belgium was a week filled with stories as each stop brought back a memory from a time when they put their very lives at risk for our country. At Luxembourg National Cemetery, they remembered the 5,100 soldiers that were lost during the battle. They were able to share a moment of reconciliation when a former German soldier and fellow veteran of the battle joined them in Bastogne. People of the town of Bastogne also gathered to celebrate with them during the annual Nuts Festival- a celebration that honors General Anthony McAuliffe when he responded “Nutz” (Go to hell) when the Germans demanded his division to surrender.

In Reims, France, John Katsaros of the 8th division Air Force, remembered this small French town as the place where he became a prisoner of war. Shot down by German troops, he jumped from his plane right before it crashed, sustaining serious injury. Unable to move, he was eventually captured by German soldiers but later rescued by the French resistance. A 10,000 Reichsmark bounty was placed on his head, and he was again recaptured. John was able to escape again by walking for days with no food and very little clothing over the Pyrenees mountains to cross into Spain.

The 75th commemoration of the Battle of the Bulge was most likely the last chance for many of these veterans to return to the site where they bravely fought and a unique opportunity for us to hear their experiences directly from them.

Across our projects, one thing always remains constant: we aim to build and create places that drive deeper connections within communities. Recently, our Portland team worked on a project at Family Violence Project (FVP) in Maine, an organization dedicated to ending domestic violence. FVP offers support to abuse victims and also has two shelters for those seeking help and who need a safe place to stay. One of the shelters was in desperate need of an upgrade and general maintenance improvements. To help FVP, Consigli and a team of subcontractors assessed the shelter and committed to doing a complete renovation of the shelter. The main goal was to make this space feel more like a home and less like a shelter.

Like many mission-based organizations, FVP relies heavily on donor support and funding, which means managing a tight budget in order to offer its services. The shelter was a 100-year-old house with six bedrooms converted into efficiency apartments and the front entrance had an unsafe ramp largely used by mothers with strollers. The flooring needed to be replaced, there were plumbing issues throughout, and there were overall general maintenance issues that needed to be addressed. Further, this project was also unlike others in that it was critical to keep the anonymity of FVP’s clients in order to keep them safe. The discretion of all parties involved was crucial to not reveal the identities of the women and children at the center.

This renovation would not have been possible without the incredible support of our team of subcontractors who dedicated their time and materials to do the necessary repairs. Johnson and Jordan upgraded the plumbing in the kitchen and all the bathrooms which included the installation of a new shower and water heater that supported the entire house. Ace Painting painted every wall, trim, and surface of the house that needed a fresh coat and Paul White Tile installed new flooring in the entire home. To ensure that the children had ample space to run and play the team did an entire cleanup of the front and back yards with the help of Atlantic Landscaping providing the mulch and Hammond Lumber donating all the materials to update the porches to include outdoor seating.

In just six short weeks, the Family Violence Project shelter is now an inviting space for any domestic violence survivors who needs a safe place to heal and recover. When we gathered at FVP’s newly renovated shelter to celebrate the opening, we were reminded about what it means to be part of a business that values relationship-building. The significance of this project was not about how much time and materials went into this renovation. It was about how a team came together to create spaces where all communities can thrive. We are grateful to the Family Violence Project for the work they do and for the residents in sharing their stories with us.

Some of the most challenging elements of getting performing arts spaces just right are keeping sound where it’s supposed to be—and not letting it travel anywhere else, the craftsmanship required to meet high levels of architectural detail, and team communication!

When building a performing arts space – things to consider for successful projects include:

Utilizing Building Elements to Keep Sound Where It Belongs
In buildings that house performing spaces where there can be a number of different adjacent uses, it’s essential to keep sound where it belongs. There are a number of measures that can be taken to achieve a high STC (Sound Transmission Class) rating, which designates a material’s ability to resist airborne sound transfer, such as multi-layer floors, preventing vibration, sealing all possible acoustic penetrations, isolating walls, and reflective ceilings.

In addition to keeping the sound of music where it’s intended, reducing potentially distracting noise from mechanical systems is also important. Sound dampening, acoustical insulation can be used inside and out on mechanical systems. Oversize ductwork allows for slower airflow and results in a quieter system. MEP/FPs can be isolated from the building structure using vibration isolation hangers and neoprene waffle pads.

When working on Wellesley College’s Pendleton Hall on a renovation and addition, the millwork in the salon and rehearsal hall was used both for its aesthetics and acoustic purposes: it has a layer of insulation, acoustic panels, and a layer of wood slats. The slats in the walls allowed exhaust air to pass through this millwork system to keep the volume at desired levels in the space, while still providing comfort and humidity control.

Paying Close Attention to Architectural Details
Performing spaces demand a high level of customization, detail, and quality. Using 3D modeling and mockups in the field (see our Emerson Colonial Theatre renovation) ensures our builder’s ability to meet these expectations, as does fully understanding the architect’s design intent and staffing our projects with the right craftsman to carry out their vision. Some specific examples from our recent experience include:

Modeling
To ensure the complex mechanical systems would fit within the space while working on Yale’s Adams Center for Musical Art, our builders performed a laser scan of the existing building and then electronically added pieces of the mechanical system into the job. That study resulted in adjusting the ceiling height to better accommodate the mechanical systems.

On Wellesley’s Pendleton Hall, the project’s predominant building material was concrete because of its acoustic properties. However, the design called for the concrete treatment to look like wood, complete with shadow lines. It was important to find the right tone and texture, so our team custom-made the concrete in batches and created “tombstone” samples to ensure each batch blended seamlessly and met the architect’s goals.

Craftmanship
Similarly, Wellesley’s Pendelton Hall project had a number of linear elements that required careful attention by our team. The architect wanted to ensure that anywhere someone looked inside the building, the linear properties converged properly. From the lights to the soffits, to the wall mullions, all had to be perfectly aligned on the proper horizontal or vertical plane to create the desired aesthetic. Our expert team of craftsman took the time to understand the desired outcome and delivered.

Team Coordination & Co-Location
Coordination between the design and engineering team and all construction trades requires patience and commitment on intricate construction projects.  A construction management tool, co-location— establishing a shared physical location where all members of a construction project team collaborate– helps ensure team communication across all trade specialties and creates a forum for discussing careful planning and coordination. Seemingly a simple concept, it’s critical in our highly detailed projects and only truly works with foresight and commitment. As an example; to ensure all of the trades were closely coordinated during our work on Yale’s Adams Center for Musical Arts, our team co-located twice a week with the design, engineering team, and subcontractors.

Members of Consigli’s Hartford office were joined by Senator Richard Blumenthal, Representative John B. Larson, Mayor Luke Bronin and residents of North Hartford at the groundbreaking.

The redeveloped factory will include a 35,000-square-foot indoor farm run by FreshBox Farms and a commercial kitchen space and incubator for developing local food businesses. The two historic houses on the property are also being redeveloped for community uses.

“The renovation of this historic vacant factory will promote economic development and the health and wellness for the North Hartford community, said President Matthew Consigli. We are excited to contribute towards the revitalization of this community.”

The farm uses sustainable urban farming techniques and includes a vegetable garden, fruit orchard, beehives, and a composting system. In addition to being a community food source, Common Good City Farm is an outdoor learning center, offering agricultural workshops and youth education. The Farm is located on D.C. Parks and Recreation land and is part of the Department’s efforts to connect residents to their local environment.

In 2017, the Washington Architectural Foundation and Catholic University’s School of Architecture worked with a team of high-school students who helped design a storage shed for the farm so more seasonal produce could be used by the community. This project is a unique use of D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation land, that allows for people to actually improve their health through healthy food.

The first part of the shed, for dry storage, was completed last year. Work on the final portion began today.

“Our Foundation’s mission is to bring design to the community and this structure, small though it may be, shows the power of that,” said Mary Fitch, Executive Vice President of the Washington Architectural Foundation. “This project involved high school students, college students, architects and local citizens all with the common goal to support healthy food in our community.” The Foundation is partnering on this project with Consigli , KUBE Architecture and Matthew J. Daw, PE.

At the event, the Scouts honored Anthony Consigli, Chief Executive Officer of Consigli Construction Co., Inc., and Peter H. Reynolds, best-selling Children’s Book Author and Founder of FableVision, as outstanding examples of corporate citizenship and positive community involvement. WCVB TV anchor Randy Price, himself a proud Eagle Scout, served as master of ceremonies.

Consigli received the “Ralph Lowell Distinguished Citizen Award” for his active role in working to address community issues through his involvement with helping others.

The Spirit of Adventure Council also presented the “Distinguished Eagle Scout Award” to Peter H. Reynolds for his extraordinary national eminence in his field as well as his strong record of voluntary community service. The Distinguished Eagle Award is presented to an elite cadre of Eagle Scouts, which includes political, business, and creative luminaries such as President Gerald R. Ford, Neil Armstrong, Steve Fosset, Gov. Dukakis, James Lovell, Sam Walton, James Brady, William Hanna, J. W. Marriott Jr., and Steven Spielberg.
